The Utah Safe Drinking Water Act (Title 19, Chapter 4 of the Utah Code) empowers the Utah Drinking Water Board to enact rules pertaining to public water systems. Those rules are listed below.
Congress has passed a Federal Safe Drinking Water Act (US EPA) which empowers the EPA to adopt and enforce rules which must be met by each public water system in the nation. By agreement with the EPA, Utah administers the federal act within the state. Thus, Utah's laws and rules regarding public drinking systems are in conformity with federal rules. Public water suppliers in Utah should refer to the Utah laws and rules.
Each rule shown on this page is provided in two versions.
The Utah Division of Administrative Rules (DAR) compiles and publishes all state rules. Any link shown below tagged with "DAR" will take you the DAR version of the rule. For an index of all drinking water rules, as published by DAR, see Title R309. Environmental Quality, Drinking Water.
The Utah Division of Drinking Water maintains its own version of the rules. These are designated below as "DDW Version". The DDW version contains user-friendly formatting and, in some cases, guidance language which is not available in the DAR version. Furthermore, DDW versions are kept up to date. Thus, we recommend that you use the "DDW Version".
You can search all the rules for words or phrases by opening All Rules - DDW Version 1/31/08 (htm) and using the "Find On This Page" feature of your browser. You can also open All Rules - DDW Version 1/31/08 (pdf) and use the "Find" feature of Adobe Acrobat Reader. (Note: these are large files which may take some time to open.) You can also search our entire site, including these rules, by going to DDW Search.
The Division of Drinking Water is revising the numbering and content of the drinking water rules. For each rule shown below, the rule number on the extreme left is from the new numbering scheme. The rule number immediately to the right of this new number is the old number which has been, or will be, retired. The currently active rule is shown in bold or as a hyperlink.
DISCLAIMER: The rules provided on this web site, and DAR's web site, are NOT the "official", legal versions of the rules. The legal versions of the rules are kept in an internal database administered by DAR. To obtain the legal version, contact DAR. Alternately, the legal version of the rules may be obtained in hard (paper) copy. On this web site, we attempt to post rules in an accurate and timely manner, but this cannot be guaranteed.
The 31 rules listed below are available in various compilations, as follows. (Note: The compilation files are large. They may take some time to open or download.)
